Austin, Texas

Restored in 2001 for use as office space by Shoehorn Design, the historic Arnold Bakery has become a keystone structure in the revitalization of Austin’s East 11th Street corridor. The brick façade’s restoration was based on a single 1893 photograph. The modern wing added to the rear uses materials such as sawn limestone, steel and glass to clearly delineate the historic and contemporary parts of the structure. According to the Texas Historical Commission, the building’s exterior “retains a strong degree of architectural and historical integrity,” which secured its listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
